  • Avoidance of dyes, fillers and/or preservatives
  • Making dose, dosage forms or medications not commercially available
  • Making combination or sustained-release therapy to improve compliance
  • Making unique dosage forms designed for specific problems
  • Making medications that have been discontinued by a manufacturer
  • Flavoring medications to improve taste

Compounding vs. Manufacturing

Manufacturing

Compounding

  • No specific patient in mind when drug is produced
  • Specific patient in mind when medication is custom made
  • Has prescribers matching patients to product available
  • Making the formulation meet the patient's needs
  • Economic considerations limit choices in drug and dosages forms
  • Administer the drug to the sight of action in the most effective dosage form available
