Pain Management

Compounding pharmacists meet many unique patient needs in pain management.  They can prepare medications that are not commercially available such as lower or higher dose medication or pain medication without certain ingredients.  They also prepare many transdermal gels that are applied to the area needed.  Use of transdermal gels can help reduce the side effects of pain medication such as eliminating gastro-intestinal side effects including stomach upset and bleeding. Different types of medication can be incorporated into a transdermal gel base such as anti-inflammatory drugs, muscle relaxants, anesthetic and neuropathic agents to treat a variety of medical conditions such as arthritis, nerve pain, shingles, muscle spasms and many more.

Examples of commonly compounded pain medications include:

  • Hydrocodone Capsules
  • Iontophoresis & Phonophoresis Medications
  • Shingles Treatment
  • Transdermal Gels including the most common medications:
                            Ketoprofen
                            Cyclobenzaprine
                            Lidocaine
                            Gabapentin
                            Dexamethasone
                            Capsaicin
                            Ketamine
