Other Types of Compounds

Pediatrics

There are many different unique needs met with compounding for Pediatric Patients:

  • Flavoring of medication to allow easier administration (flavoring DOES REQUIRE physician's prescription)
  • Compound medications without dyes, fillers, additives, sugar, corn products or other allergens
  • Compound medications only available in a capsule or tablet form into a suspension
  • Compound medications into suppositories when there is no other route of administration

Examples of Common Pediatric Compounds

  • Promethazine Gel for nausea and vomiting
  • Wart removers
  • Anti-Fungal Nail Polish
  • Tetracaine lollipops for sore throats
  • Changing the dosage form of ADD medications, ex. Methylphenidate chocolate troches or transdermal gel

Dental

There are many needs compounding pharmacists can meet in dental care such as:

  • Specialized mouthwashes for patients with ulcers and infection
  • Acylcovir/Lidocaine lip balm for patients suffering from cold sores
  • Anesthetic lollipops to deaden areas before and after procedure
  • TMJ topical treatments
  • Anti-gag lollipops to suppress the gag reflex prior to procedures

General Practice

Compounding pharmacist meet many needs in general practice. Some examples of compounds made for general practioners include the following:

  • Nicotine Lollipops for smoking cessation
  • Migraine Treatments
  • Rectal Rocket Suppositories for hemorrhoids
  • PCS Capsules for Weight Loss
  • Anti-Fungal Nail Polish
  • Promethazine Gel
